The Lead: Plea deal for abuse charges
After several news reports about residents being abused by employees at Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center in Anna, Gov. JB Pritzker announced the state was taking new steps to protect residents, including installing surveillance cameras.
Those cameras caught two employees hitting residents with developmental disabilities. Both were charged with felonies.
But as Beth Hundsdorfer reports in our latest story about abuse at Choate, which is now slated to be significantly downsized by the state, Union County prosecutors offered plea deals allowing the employees to reduce their felony charges and potentially avoid jail time.
